Letterform Abstraction I

Although I enjoyed this project, I don't feel I spent adequate time on it and I think it shows.  If I did this project again, I would spend more time designing the letterforms and making them detailed.  My favorite out of the four was the upper left abstraction.  I think the lines, although not perfect, were relatively crisp and smooth.  I believe my least successful portion of this project was the top left abstraction.  The lines were shaky and I don't think the final product was as dynamic as it could have been.  I thought the other two abstractions were decent, but nothing special.  Overall, I think I did a decent job on this project, although I know I could have done better.

Interior Design

     The art-related career that I am interested in is interior design.  I chose to research this career because it is something that I am considering pursuing in the future.  The average yearly salary for an interior designer is $51,990. I would need 2-4 years of schooling at a design school or university and then would go into a formal design apprenticeship program.  As an interior designer, I would work with customers in designing and constructing good layouts and color schemes/decor for rooms according to their own style and taste.  Customers may include families or business owners. 
     Since interior design is a luxury, an interior design firm may not be as successful during recessions.  Also, it may be more difficult to find business in a rural area compared to an urban area.  Overall, however, I believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages and I still plan on considering interior design when deciding on a career.

Doodle Assignment

I enjoyed this project.  Even though my original plan was entirely different, I liked how it ended up.  The same structure that I had planned is still present in the final product, but the specific elements are different.  For example, my sun is still there, but it has earth drawn on it instead.  The hardest part of this project was outlining (I was using a regular Sharpie) without making the designs a big blob.  Also, 4 hours straight of an open Sharpie in my moderately sized bedroom proved daunting.  I can only imagine what my gerbil was going through!  Overall, I think this project was successful.

Two-Point Perspective Old Building

Although this project didn't end up perfect, I was pleased with it.  Seeing some parts of it now, I'm wondering what I was thinking, while I'm content with other aspects.  I would have tweaked the small section below the half length window on the right side of the drawing because I don't think it quite fit.  Also, the handrails on the stairs weren't placed where I would have liked them, especially on the left side.  The window ended up shaky, too.  I was happy with the overall impression of the piece, though, and the outline of the windows was accurate, I believe.  I also liked the cylindrical roof.  The hardest part of this piece was making the lines go to a point outside of the paper.  This project helped me learn the basics of 2-pt. perspective.

One-Point Perspective Hall

Even though I don't enjoy perspective drawing too much, I didn't mind this project.  My finished hall didn't look very structurally similar to the original hallway, but I think that was the best way to go to achieve the look I was going for.  Looking back, I wish I would have made the ball pit pattern and colors used in the piece more consistent.  I think there was a bit of a disconnect between the floor and the rest of the hall.  Although many things didn't end up how I wanted them, like my crooked ceiling tiles, I did like my adjacent hallways and I think my hallway effectively looked 3D.  My main struggle with this project was using a ruler (I hate rulers!) and outlining it without the lines being shaky.  I learned how to use 1-pt. perspective while working on this project.

Color Wheel

I really enjoyed this project.  I liked the designs I used, which included fire for the tertiary colors, water for the secondary colors, and bumps for the primary colors.  I spent longer on the red section than any of the others, and I think it shows.  All of the sections ended up looking all right, though, I think.  If I did this project again, I would add more blue to the green, as well as more effectively differenciating the yellows.  The most difficult part was working with tempera paint since I usually use acrylics.  While completing this project, I learned how to work with different types of paint and brushes than I am used to.  I feel that this project was successful.

One-Point Perspective Name

 

Although some of my lines aren't straight and my name is off center, I think this piece was effective.  I liked the grey background I did, although the colored pencil wasn't very smooth, and the "U" was my favorite letter.  If I did this project again, I would use a ruler for all of the lines and make a few of my letters differently.  Keeping the spacing and lines even was the most difficult part of this assignment for me because I hate planning before I start a project.  Planning is definitely something I need to work on.  Overall, I'm pleased with my take on the assignment, although I would change a few things if I did it again.
